I HAVE THIS ALBUM. This is an excellent must-see documentary! It examines the need to expand the basis of traditional Western treatments for addiction. It is such an important discussion at any time but even more so now with the current devastating opioid crisis. It focuses on a young woman's journey as she seeks a way to move past her addiction and as she looks for a way to regain her life. Through this focus on Adrianne, I found myself reconsidering the stereotypes of who is an addict, what is addiction, and where is addiction.
With sensitivity but without sentimentality, it examines the choices, or the lack of choices, available to people within the traditional western-style treatments. It discusses how a person within the current confines of established treatments many times must trade one addiction for another - for a prescribed addiction such as methadone or morphine. For many, this is no choice at all. It leaves them feeling as trapped and as lost as before.
I found the coverage of the medicinal effects of psylocibin mushrooms quite informative but what I found most interesting within the film was the coverage of Ibogaine treatment. With Ibogaine, it's possible for the person to not have to trade one type of addiction for another. It shows Ibogaine treatment can give the person the ability to break free of their physical addiction and to begin exploring the psychological basis that gave rise to the addiction. The Iboga centre looks to approach the sessions from many angles, with medical, psychological, and emotional counselling as part of the overall treatment. It gives people another path to follow to find themselves again.
There is a sadness in the film as we follow Adrianne and as we glimpse others that are lost in the side streets of their minds and in the side streets of our cities. With an expansion of the traditional Western-style treatments for addiction to incorporate medicinal treatments from other parts of the world, another way back can be opened.
The filmmakers do not pretend to have all the answers nor to assert that these forms of treatment are for everyone. But they are asking questions and exploring alternatives. And it seems these treatments hold out a real and wonderful possibility. And if there is possibility, should we not explore more, ask more, see more?
I want to know more and I would recommend this documentary to anyone who feels the same.
